Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday urged for “fair delimitation” as political leaders from seven states prepare for a joint action meeting in Chennai on March 22. Stalin warned that the delimitation exercise scheduled for post-2026 could severely affect Tamil Nadu's representation in Parliament if conducted solely based on population size.
Joint Meeting of States to Discuss Delimitation
The upcoming meeting will see participation from states such as Odisha, Punjab, and West Bengal, among others. In a video message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Stalin said,
“It is the beginning of a movement that will shape the future of our country.”
He added that Tamil Nadu’s initiative has now evolved into a national movement, with more states joining the call for equitable representation in Parliament.
A historic day for Indian federalism!

Concerns Over Representation and State Rights
Stalin emphasized that the issue goes beyond the number of Members of Parliament.
“This is about our states’ rights. Our voices in Parliament will be silenced. Our rights will be compromised,” he said.
He described the delimitation based solely on population growth as a deliberate attempt to undermine certain states, particularly in the South.
Delimitation Explained: What’s at Stake
Delimitation refers to the redrawing of parliamentary and assembly constituencies based on demographic changes. According to Stalin, if delimitation is carried out after 2026, Tamil Nadu could lose up to eight of its current 39 Lok Sabha seats. In contrast, northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which have seen higher population growth, stand to gain more seats.
A National Movement for Fair Representation
The March 5 All-Party Meeting convened by DMK was hailed by Stalin as a “landmark moment.” Since then, Tamil Nadu MPs and Ministers have been engaging with leaders of other concerned states, building momentum for what Stalin calls a fight for federal equity.
