On April 4, the Union Cabinet approved four key railway infrastructure projects across Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, with a projected investment of ₹18,658 crore. These projects aim to extend India’s railway network by approximately 1,247 kilometers and enhance connectivity in 15 districts across the three states.
Project Details and Regions Covered
The four approved projects include:
Jarapda 3rd and 4th Line in Sambalpur, Odisha
Sason 3rd and 4th Line in Jharsuguda, Odisha
Kharsia–Naya Raipur–Parmalinkasa 5th and 6th Line in Chhattisgarh
Gondia–Balharshah Doubling Project in Maharashtra
These projects are expected to be completed by the year 2030-31.
Enhanced Connectivity and Infrastructure Benefits
According to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), the approved projects will lead to the construction of 19 new railway stations. This development will significantly improve transportation access for around 3,350 villages and benefit an estimated 47.25 lakh people.
The added infrastructure is also expected to improve railway mobility, reduce congestion, and boost the operational efficiency of Indian Railways, especially on some of its busiest routes.
Supporting the Vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'
The CCEA emphasized that these multi-tracking and doubling projects align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a self-reliant India. The developments are aimed at empowering local populations through enhanced connectivity, improved logistics, and new employment or self-employment opportunities.
