Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Apple's stranglehold on the App Store’s payment system took another blow. The Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals has turned down Apple's last-minute petition to stop a lower court's decision that allows developers to circumvent Apple's in-app payment interface. This is part of the continuing legal battle between Apple and Epic Games.
As a result of this ruling, app developers can now funnel user traffic to external payment sites, escaping the 15–30% commission paid to Apple. This change could undermine the revenue model of the App Store.
The reasons for the rejection of Apple's plea by the court
The court concluded that Apple failed to justify the need to postpone enforcing the lower court’s ruling. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers undid Apple’s supposed victory in a 2021 order, claiming that they were restricting linking to other payment systems—and other Apple-controlled payment systems—outside the Apple-controlled ecosystem.
Now that the order is active, several major apps have complied. For instance, users of the Kindle app from Amazon will now enjoy a “Get Book” button that takes them straight to the Amazon page, eliminating commissions to Apple.
Apple's Reply
Apple remarked, as shared on 9to5Mac, that it is displeased about the court deciding against suspending the district court's order and upholds its determination on the App Store:
“Apple Tax” For Developers Ends
“While we continue to disassociate with the district court’s ruling. But we’re unhappy with the not staying decision.”
Epic Games has Official Statement
Epic Games, the plaintiff in the case, praised the ruling with their Twitter Celebrating: Tim Sweeney Author of the posts claimed statement:
“Now that the usa has a distant relatives tax, morbidly their decade long tax comes to an end. The company takes considerable unfair advantage that judgement should go.”
Spotify and other industry leaders are likely planning to use those new opportunities without the policy limits to see how freely they can get their services on their applications.
