People told what they saw with their eyes

Nikyra Dedeaux in New Orleans and Ian Parsons of Gulfport, Mississippi, were celebrating New Year's Eve on Bourbon Street when a vehicle came and struck their 18-year-old friend, Nikyra Dedeaux, who dreamed of becoming a nurse. "A truck came around the corner and went forward, throwing people in the air, like a scene from a movie," Parsons told The Associated Press. Her friend was seriously hurt and thrown at least 30 feet. "I was lucky to survive."

The area was shaken by the sound of collision and gunfire

Parsons said the crowd dispersed in sudden chaos. He lived through the horror, hearing gunfire and explosives. He saw blood pouring in the streets and maimed people. "Everybody was screaming and yelling, 'Bodies, bodies,' up and down the street," Parsons said. The scene rocked the area.

The injured were crying on the floor

Parsons said the wounded were lying on the floor crying. The scene was absolutely mind-blowing. It felt like he was standing in a battlefield. Parsons said Dedeaux was a responsible daughter. She was younger than all her siblings, but she helped take care of everyone. Dedeaux had a job at a nearby hospital. She was also about to start college and work toward her goal of becoming a registered nurse.
