Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet former US President Donald Trump during his upcoming visit to the United States. While global concerns over Trump’s policies persist, India remains optimistic about securing crucial agreements. Preparations for PM Modi’s visit are in full swing, with multiple programs scheduled over two days. Among the key focuses of this visit is India’s potential acquisition of the P-8I aircraft, a powerful asset for maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare.
India Pushes for the P-8I Deal
According to The Times of India, India has been actively advocating for a military deal with the US, even before PM Modi’s visit. India is expected to renew its request for six additional P-8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft, a proposal that was stalled three years ago during President Joe Biden’s tenure due to price disagreements.
Government sources indicate that discussions are being revisited ahead of PM Modi’s meeting with Donald Trump in Washington. India sees the P-8I as a crucial tool to counter China’s aggressive military actions in the Indian Ocean and along its borders. With growing tensions, these aircraft would help India track enemy submarines and warships effectively.
Why Does India Need the P-8I?
China’s increasing presence in the Indian Ocean and ongoing tensions at the Ladakh border have pushed India to strengthen its surveillance and defense capabilities. The P-8I, known as India’s potential "Brahmastra" (ultimate weapon), provides rapid response capabilities against enemy threats.
Designed for long-range maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare, the P-8I is equipped with advanced sensors and weapon systems that can efficiently locate and neutralize submarines.
Previously, India had signed a $1.1 billion defense deal with the US for four Poseidon 8I aircraft, which have been actively used to monitor Chinese military activities along the 3,488 km Line of Actual Control (LAC) since tensions escalated in April 2020.
Advanced Features of the P-8I
The P-8I aircraft boasts cutting-edge technology, making it one of the most advanced maritime patrol aircraft globally. Key features include:
Advanced Radar and Electro-Optic Sensors: Enhances surveillance capabilities for detecting enemy movements.
Harpoon Block-II Missiles: Can destroy enemy ships in all weather conditions.
High Speed and Range: Operates at 907 km/h with a range of 1,200 nautical miles, ensuring extensive coverage of ocean territories.
Why Was the Previous P-8I Deal Canceled?
In May 2021, the US State Department had approved the sale of six P-8I aircraft, along with related equipment, at an estimated cost of $2.4 billion. However, India later withdrew from the deal, leading to its cancellation. If India proceeds with the purchase now, the cost may increase significantly.
Price Negotiations with the US
India has requested the US government to propose a fair price for the six P-8I aircraft under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. This will help India assess whether the deal aligns with its budget and strategic requirements.
Given the strong relationship between PM Modi and Donald Trump, there is optimism that India could negotiate favorable terms. However, the final agreement will only be revealed after official discussions between the two leaders.
