Shiva devotees mark Maha Shivratri by fasting and, depending on the person’s health condition, some opt for Nirjala Vrat or waterless and foodless fasts, while others prefer Phalahar where they consume certain “sattvic” foods. All Shiva devotees will observe Maha Shivratri 2025 on February 26, 2025. To keep devotees going through the day, here is a list of five recommended foods that can be consumed while fasting:
1. Dry fruits and Fruit
Fruits such as papayas, bananas, apples, and pomegranates make for excellent choices while fasting due to their natural sugar content. To keep yourself satiated while boosting your stamina, consume almonds, raisings or cashew nuts with them.
2. Saboona (Tapioca Pearls) Dishes
Shrine devotees observing the fast will usually fancy Sabudana Khichadi or Sabudana Kheer. These two dishes provide adequate nutrients and energy due to rich carbohydrate content. To add more flavor to the dishes, they are accompanied with mild spices, rock salt, or sendha namak.
3. Singhara Water Chestnut and Kuttu Buckwheat Flour.
Rotis, puris, and pancakes are made from water chestnuts flour and buckwheat flour. These gluten-free flours are rich in fiber, making them effective in curbing your appetite. Enjoy them with some curd for a more complete meal.
4. Makhana Foxnuts.
Makhana is a great snack to munch on while fasting. It is nutritious, light, and can be enjoyed in different ways. You can roast it in a little ghee and rock salt or make a tasty kheer using milk and jaggery.
5. Dairy Products Milk, Curd, and Paneer.
Curd and Paneer are considered during the Vrat. They are high in protein, calcium, and healthy fats. A glass of milk with dry fruits or a bowl of curd with fruits is a delicious way to feel full.
