In Delhi, the use of colored stickers on vehicles is integral part of the traffic management system. These stickers enable the quick identification of the vehicle's fuel type- being Petrol, Diesel, or CNG. This not only saves precious time but also promotes enhancement of order and safety on the roads. Not displaying the relevant sticker can lead to a challan as per the Motor Vehicle Act.

Meaning of Colour-Coded Fuel Stickers

Orange Sticker: Vehicles running on diesel.

Light Blue Sticker: Vehicles using petrol or CNG.

Grey Sticker: For all other vehicle categories.

This rule, which was optional to follow between 2012-2013, became compulsory in 2019 for all vehicles, both old and new.

Challan and Penalties

Vehicle Fine

Fuel Sticker Violation ₹5000

Not having a HSRP and sticker compliant vehicle also incurs fine

Failure to possess the correct fuel sticker gives the authorities the right to lodge a challan under Section 192 (1) of the Motor Vehicles Act. The Delhi Government did enact a policy in 2020 where stickers compliant vehicles would not be charged, but non-toggle vehicles would be penalized in the amount of ₹5000.
