New Delhi: DY Chandrachud retired from the post of Chief Justice of the country on Sunday. He has been replaced by Justice Sanjeev Khanna. Justice Sanjeev Khanna has taken oath as the 51st Chief Justice of the country today. He has been administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

What work cannot DY Chandrachud do after retirement?

DY Chandrachud cannot practice law anywhere in the country due to Article 124(7) of the Constitution. That is, after retirement from the Supreme Court, the CJI or judges cannot practice law. However, he can play other roles.

Legal experts say that such a provision has been made so that the sanctity and impartiality of the judiciary are maintained. This prevents any possibility of bias. One thing that comes out of this is that if the former CJI of the country practices law, the dignity of his previous position will be weakened.

What can I do after retirement?

  • Can enter public service.
  • Can become Governor or member of Government committees.
  • Can act as a mediator in disputes.
  • Can become a member of the Arbitration Council of India.
