A sudden shift in weather patterns has prompted the Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an Orange Alert for several parts of Jharkhand. Residents of Ranchi and six surrounding districts have been warned to brace for severe thunderstorms, lightning, and intense hailstorms over the next 24 to 48 hours. The change is attributed to a combination of a Western Disturbance and a cyclonic circulation active over the region.
Districts on High Alert While the entire state is expected to witness cloudy skies, the IMD has specifically flagged seven districts for high-intensity weather:
Ranchi, Khunti, and Gumla: Likely to experience heavy downpours and significant hailstorms.
Lohardaga, Simdega, and Latehar: Residents should expect gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph.
Palamu and Garhwa: Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected in isolated pockets.
Impact on Daily Life and Agriculture The weather office has warned that the hailstorms could cause substantial damage to standing crops, particularly wheat and seasonal vegetables. In Ranchi, the sudden rain has already brought down the maximum temperature by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius, providing temporary relief from the rising heat, but the squally winds pose a risk to temporary structures and power lines.
Safety Advisory for Residents With the orange alert in place, the Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued the following guidelines:
Seek Shelter: Avoid staying in open fields or under trees during lightning.
Farmers' Alert: Farmers are advised to postpone harvesting or secure their produce in safe storage.
Travel Caution: Commuters should remain cautious as visibility may drop during heavy showers and dust storms.
Forecast for the Coming Week According to Meteorologist Abhishek Anand, this wet spell is likely to persist until March 31. While March 29 might see a slight reduction in activity, another wave of rain is expected to hit the state on March 30 and 31, keeping the heatwave at bay for the remainder of the month.
