In a major crackdown against the fuel mafia, the Amroli police in Surat have unearthed a sophisticated illegal diesel operation. Operating stealthily next to a local tea stall near the Anjani Industries Canal, the racket was selling low-quality, subsidized, or smuggled diesel to unsuspecting vehicle owners at significantly lower prices.
The Raid and Seizures
Acting on a precise tip-off, a team led by Police Inspector JB Vanar raided the location on the Amroli-Velanja road. The operation led to the arrest of two key individuals: Bharat Kerasiya (43) and Mahesh Khisdiya (32).
During the search, authorities seized assets worth over ₹22.69 Lakhs, which includes:
800 Litres of substandard diesel (valued at ₹61,600).
Two Fuel Tankers used for transporting and storing the illicit fuel (valued at ₹22 Lakhs).
Mobile phones and other equipment used to manage the black-market sales.
Modus Operandi: "Tea & Fuel" Strategy
The accused had set up a makeshift "petrol pump" setup right beside a busy tea stall. This allowed them to blend into the industrial traffic of the Amroli area without raising immediate suspicion. By offering diesel at rates lower than the official market price, they attracted truck drivers and commercial vehicle operators looking to save on fuel costs. However, the police noted that the fuel quality was extremely poor, posing a direct threat to vehicle engines and the environment.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). While two suspects are in custody, the police have identified two more accomplices involved in the supply chain and are currently conducting raids to apprehend them.
The Surat police have issued a warning to the public against purchasing fuel from unauthorized outlets, emphasizing that such "cheap" diesel can lead to permanent engine damage and legal complications for the buyers as well.
