Sunil's Retirement Comeback: Footballer Sunil Chhetri has announced his return from international retirement to aid the beleaguered national squad in the FIFA friendlies this month. The apex football body of India, All India Football Federation, announced the news on Chetri's return on Thursday.

In reference AIFF official X handle, "Chhetri Sunil is back. The captain, the leader, the legend returns once again for the March International Window."

Chhetri's return was shocking, considering how less than a year ago he announced his retirement after a stellar career. His retirement has created a big void in the national team which is yet to be filled. This month, India is scheduled to play two FIFA friendlies, the fixtures will take place at Shillong’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The Journey Started for Sunil Chhetri...

Facing Pakistan in 2005 marked the start of his international career. In the TOP 5 list of international goals scored, he sits as the 4th position with 94 goals. Out of all active footballers in the world after Ronaldo, Ali Daei and Messi, he possesses the 3rd position. The international recognition bestowed upon him is the Arjuna Award (2011) and Padma Shri (2019).

Chhetri captured the AIFF Player of the Year accolade on six occasions during his remarkable career. At the international level, Chhetri has been a member of Indian teams that lifted the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008, the SAFF Championship in 2011 and 2015, the Nehru Cup in 2007, 2009, and 2012, and the Intercontinental Cup in 2017.
