Russia has formally extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the 80th Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, 2025. The invitation marks an important moment in India-Russia diplomatic relations, celebrating the Soviet Union's 1945 victory over Nazi Germany.
Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko confirmed the invitation during a media briefing. He told Russian news agency Tass, “It’s being worked out, it should be this year. He has an invitation.” Ongoing discussions between New Delhi and Moscow will determine Modi’s participation.
Victory Day: A Key Event in Russia’s National Identity
Victory Day is one of Russia’s most significant national holidays, marked by a grand military parade in Moscow’s Red Square. The event honors the victory in the Great Patriotic War (World War II) and showcases Russia’s military strength and historical legacy.
This year’s celebrations carry extra weight as they commemorate the 80th anniversary of the German surrender on May 9, 1945. Alongside Modi, Russia has invited leaders from several other “friendly nations” to attend.
Strengthening India-Russia Ties
PM Modi last visited Russia in July 2024, his first trip to the country in nearly five years. During the visit, he held in-depth discussions with President Vladimir Putin on strategic, economic, and geopolitical issues. Modi also invited Putin to visit India—a proposal Putin accepted, although a visit date has not yet been confirmed.
Both leaders maintain close ties, often engaging in regular phone calls and meetings during multilateral events. Their dialogue reflects ongoing collaboration on defense, energy, and international diplomacy.
Diplomatic Implications
If Modi attends the May 9 Victory Day celebrations, it would not only reaffirm the strong historical and strategic partnership between India and Russia but also underline India's independent foreign policy stance amid evolving global alignments.
