Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) senior functionary Suresh 'Bhaiyyaji' Joshi has described the ongoing controversy surrounding Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb as unwarranted. Speaking on the issue, he referred to the tomb as a symbol of India's cultural generosity and inclusivity.

“Aurangzeb died here, so his tomb exists here. Those who have faith will visit,” Joshi said. He drew a parallel with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s decision to allow a tomb for Adilshahi general Afzal Khan near Pratapgad fort, emphasizing India's historical tolerance.

Monument Seen as Cultural Symbol, Not Political Flashpoint

“This is a mark of India’s generosity and inclusiveness,” Joshi stated. “Let the tomb remain, and let people who wish to go there do so.” His remarks come amid renewed public and political debate over the relevance and preservation of the tomb in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reiterated his earlier stance, opposing the glorification of Aurangzeb’s tomb, although acknowledging its ASI-protected status which necessitates security.

Recent Protests and Divergent RSS Views

The statement follows recent tensions in Nagpur, where right-wing groups like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal protested and demanded the removal of the tomb. The controversy sparked communal tensions and drew media attention.

RSS chief spokesperson Sunil Ambekar had previously commented that the issue of Aurangzeb's tomb is not irrelevant, but the emperor himself is. Speaking in Bengaluru, he remarked that "Aurangzeb was not relevant today," indicating a different angle within the broader organization.
