Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed serious concerns over the economic impact of the recently announced US tariffs. He stated that the 26% reciprocal tariff imposed by President Donald Trump would “completely devastate” India’s economy and demanded clarity on the government’s countermeasures.

Calls for Transparency on China and US Relations

Rahul Gandhi also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the ongoing situation at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. “There should be status quo, and we should get our land back,” he said, alleging that communication between the Indian and Chinese leadership was revealed through the Chinese ambassador, not Indian officials.

Congress Demands Government Action Plan

He questioned the Modi administration’s plan to respond to both the territorial issues with China and the trade retaliation from the US. “What are you doing about our land and what will you do on the issue of tariffs?” Rahul asked.

Earlier in the day, Congress MP Manish Tewari also criticized the government for its failure to negotiate favorable trade terms with Washington. He labeled the current outcome an “abject failure” of trade diplomacy.

Commerce Ministry Expects Tariff Relief

Despite the strong political reactions, officials from the Commerce Ministry maintained that the situation might not be as severe. Sources suggested that India could qualify for an exemption under Clause 4 of the executive order issued by President Trump. If granted, this could reduce the tariff to 10% starting April 5, with the remaining 16% taking effect from April 10.

Trump defended the tariffs, saying they were modest compared to what countries impose on the US. “These are discounted and kind tariffs,” he said during his “Liberation Day” address.
