On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved the Modernisation of Command Area Development and Water Management (M-CADWM) as a sub-scheme of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) for the fiscal period 2025–2026. The newly sanctioned program carries an initial outlay of ₹1,600 crore, as per an official statement.
Focus on Efficient Water Delivery and Micro-Irrigation Support
The M-CADWM sub-scheme is designed to enhance the irrigation water-supply network by facilitating the efficient delivery of water from existing canals and other irrigation sources to designated agricultural clusters.
The scheme aims to:
Modernise water infrastructure
Ensure pressurised underground piped irrigation systems
Deliver water from a fixed source directly to farm gates (up to 1 hectare)
This will serve as a back-end support system for micro-irrigation projects, enabling farmers to adopt more efficient and sustainable water usage practices.
