After days of unrest in Murshidabad district, West Bengal is slowly returning to normal. A senior police officer confirmed that shops are reopening and displaced families are beginning to return to their homes.

Additional Director General (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim told PTI that the police are working actively to ensure stability. “Nineteen families have returned so far. Both Malda and Murshidabad administrations are cooperating to ensure the safe return of all those affected,” he said.

More Than 200 Arrests Made, Rumour Control Urged

So far, 210 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence and arson. Shamim urged the public not to fall for misinformation. “Rumours can trigger more violence. We must be cautious and verify any news before believing it,” he added.

The violence, which began on Friday in areas like Suti, Dhulian, Samserganj, and Jangipur, left three people dead and several others injured.

Father-Son Killing to Be Investigated Separately

Speaking about the brutal murder of a father and son, Shamim said that a separate case will be registered. He emphasized that everyone involved — whether directly or as a bystander — will face legal action. “No one will be spared. It may take time, but all involved will be identified,” he assured.

Police Appeal for Calm and Business Resumption

On Monday, police were seen making public announcements, encouraging shopkeepers to open their businesses and residents to return to regular life. “Our top priority is to fully restore normalcy in Murshidabad, and we are confident of achieving that soon,” Shamim said.

Political Reactions: Trinamool vs BJP

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh claimed a central agency and the Border Security Force were behind the unrest in North Bengal — an allegation that has been strongly contested by the BJP.

Referring to the violence, Ghosh described the incidents as “some bad events” and urged the public not to be provoked. He added, “West Bengal is under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. There is no need to worry. The negative aspects of the Waqf Act will not be enforced in our state.”
