How Super Overs Work in IPL 2025

  • Super Overs will continue until a winner is found, but all must be completed within one hour of the match ending.
  • The first Super Over must begin within 10 minutes of the main match ending.
  • If the first Super Over is tied, the next one must start within 5 minutes.
  • One unsuccessful DRS review per Super Over is allowed for each team.

Super Over Rules

  1. Each team gets one over of six balls. The team scoring more runs wins.
  2. If a team loses two wickets, their Super Over innings ends.
  3. If a Super Over is tied, another Super Over will be played.
  4. The Super Over will be played on the same pitch as the match, unless changed by the umpires.
  5. The team batting second in the match will bat first in the Super Over.
  6. Only players from the main match (including concussion substitutes) can participate.
  7. Penalty time from the main match carries into the Super Over.

Rules for Subsequent Super Overs (If the First Super Over is Tied)

  • The team that batted second in the first Super Over will bat first in the next.
  • The same ball from the previous Super Over must be used.
  • The fielding side must bowl from the opposite end to the previous Super Over.
  • Players dismissed in any previous Super Over cannot bat again.
  • Bowlers who bowled in the previous Super Over cannot bowl again.

What Happens If Super Overs Cannot Be Completed?

  • If Super Overs cannot be completed due to weather or other reasons, the match will be declared a tie, and points will be shared between the teams.

The BCCI’s revised Super Over rules ensure fair play and efficiency, keeping matches exciting while maintaining a strict time limit.
