Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Manish Sisodia, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi and a senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), faced a new round of questioning on Thursday, this time in connection with alleged corruption in the construction of classrooms in government schools. Already incarcerated in Tihar Jail over the Delhi excise policy case, Sisodia was escorted under heavy security to the office of the city's Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) for interrogation.
The case dates back to a 2019 complaint filed by BJP leader Vijender Gupta. It centers on allegations of major financial and procedural irregularities in a project to build additional classrooms in Delhi's government-run schools. A preliminary report by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) in 2020 had flagged "gross irregularities" and "procedural lapses" in the project, which it claimed had led to a massive cost escalation of around ₹500 crore.
This investigation adds another layer to the significant legal challenges confronting Sisodia and the AAP leadership. He has been in judicial custody since his arrest by the CBI in February 2023 in the liquor policy case and is also being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the same matter. His bail pleas have been repeatedly denied.
The Aam Aadmi Party has consistently refuted the allegations, framing them as a politically motivated campaign by the BJP to tarnish the image of its highly publicized "Delhi education model." The party maintains that the construction of new, high-quality classrooms was a landmark achievement that transformed public education in the capital, and that the charges are a baseless attempt to derail its governance agenda. The ACB's renewed focus on the case signals that Sisodia's legal battles are far from over.
