Sleep and Diabetes: Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing diseases these days. There is no cure for it. It can only be managed. Diabetes affects the blood sugar level. High blood sugar levels hurt digestion, heart health, skin, kidney, and liver function as well as sleep.
Diabetes patients do not get proper sleep or they wake up frequently. Due to this, they are not able to get complete sleep. In such a situation, they have to face many problems. Apart from this, there is also a risk of diabetes due to less sleep.
Risk of diabetes due to less sleep:
Research by Biobank has shown that less sleep is also related to diabetes. This research found that people who sleep only for 5 hours a day have a 16% higher risk of diabetes. Whereas, people who sleep only for 3-4 hours have a 41% higher risk of diabetes type 2. Research has found that despite a healthy diet, if someone sleeps less, then the risk of diabetes is higher.
Why diabetes patients’ sleep is disturbed
Type 2 diabetes patients have sleep problems due to unbalanced blood sugar levels and diabetes-related symptoms. High sugar levels (hyperglycemia) at night and low sugar levels (hypoglycemia) can cause insomnia and fatigue during the day.
Like many other serious diseases, depression and stress related to diabetes do not let you sleep at night. When blood sugar is high, the kidney signals to urinate frequently. Due to this one has to get up frequently and sleep gets disturbed. Apart from this, high blood sugar can cause headaches, excessive thirst, and fatigue, due to which one is unable to sleep properly.
Bad sleep makes diabetes serious.
Lack of sleep causes hormonal imbalance. Due to this eating habits also deteriorate. It also hurts weight. After a lack of sleep or sleeping for a short time, a person eats more food, so that he gets the energy to stay awake. In such a situation, calories increase in the body, which can increase the blood sugar level. Due to this, sleep is also disturbed. Lack of sleep can increase obesity, which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes. It can affect anyone.
