Gyandev Ahuja, a former BJP MLA from Rajasthan, has been suspended by the party following allegations that he sprinkled gangajal (holy water) at a temple in Alwar to "purify" the premises after Congress leader Tikaram Jully, a Dalit, attended a Ramnavami consecration ceremony there.
The suspension was first reported by NDTV, citing a notice issued by BJP MP and senior leader Damodar Agarwal. The notice instructed Ahuja to respond within three days, failing which further disciplinary action would be taken.
Notice Highlights Caste Discrimination Concerns
The notice emphasized the BJP’s stance against discrimination, referencing the oath taken by party members to uphold equality across caste, gender, and religion. It stated:
"Your action has maligned the party's image and falls into the category of indiscipline."
Ahuja’s action, according to the notice, violates this commitment and could be seen as an act of caste-based discrimination.
Ahuja Defends His Action, Denies Caste Motive
Responding to the controversy, Gyandev Ahuja told PTI that his act was not about Tikaram Jully's caste. He claimed his objection was directed toward the Congress party's stance on Lord Ram, accusing its leaders of denying the deity’s historical existence.
“It is wrong to say that I took this step because he (Jully) is a Dalit,” Ahuja stated. “Congress leaders question the existence of Lord Ram.”
Tikaram Jully Condemns Act, Cites Caste Bias
Tikaram Jully, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly, strongly condemned the incident. Speaking to Times of India, he said:
"This act is not only an attack on my faith but an effort to promote untouchability."
He argued that the BJP’s response to his temple visit reflects a regressive mindset towards Dalits and undermines efforts to combat caste-based exclusion in India.
Jully had previously voiced support for a campaign against untouchability in the Assembly.
