Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Bharti Airtel, one of India's leading telecommunications giants, has been hit with a financial penalty by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for violating rules related to subscriber verification.

The penalty, amounting to Rs 6.48 lakh, was imposed by the DoT's office in West Bengal. The fine stems from an audit conducted in November 2023, which found that Airtel had not adhered to the strict Know Your Customer (KYC) norms when issuing new SIM cards to some subscribers.

These verification rules are a critical part of telecom regulations in India, designed to ensure that every mobile number is linked to a properly identified individual. The process is crucial for national security and for preventing the misuse of mobile connections for fraudulent or illegal activities.

In a regulatory filing, Bharti Airtel acknowledged the notice of the penalty. While the amount is not financially significant for a company of Airtel's scale, the action underscores the government's stringent enforcement of compliance within the telecom sector. The company is required to pay the fine as directed by the regulatory body.
