Air India Ticket Prices Surge: New Fuel Surcharge of Up to ₹899 as Global War Impacts Jet Fuel Costs

Travelers planning their summer getaways are in for a shock as Air India and Air India Express have officially hiked fuel surcharges across their domestic and international networks. This decision comes as a direct consequence of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have caused global aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices to skyrocket.

Starting April 8, 2026, passengers will have to shell out more for every flight, with domestic surcharges now reaching as high as ₹899 for long-distance sectors.

Domestic Travel: New Distance-Based Pricing

Moving away from a flat-rate system, Air India has introduced a "distance-based grid" for domestic flights. This calibrated approach follows a government decision to cap domestic ATF price hikes at 25%, yet the cost pressure remains significant for the airline.

The New Domestic Surcharge Breakdown:

0 – 500 km: ₹299

501 – 1,000 km: ₹399

1,001 – 1,500 km: ₹549

1,501 – 2,000 km: ₹749

Above 2,000 km: ₹899

International Routes: Steep Hikes for Long-Haul Flyers

On international sectors, where no government price controls apply, the surcharges are even steeper. According to IATA, global jet fuel prices nearly doubled in March, hitting $195.19 per barrel. Consequently, flights to North America and Australia will now carry a massive surcharge of $280 (~₹23,300) per sector.

International Surcharge by Region:

Europe (including UK): $205

Africa: $130

Singapore: $60

West Asia / Middle East: $50

SAARC Countries: $24

The "War" Factor: Why are Prices Rising?

The ongoing conflict has not only pushed up crude oil prices but also tripled the “crack spread” the cost of refining crude into jet fuel. Additionally, airlines are facing "war risk premiums" on insurance, adding further financial strain. Air India stated that while they are passing on a portion of the cost to passengers, the airline is still absorbing a significant chunk of the total expense to remain competitive.

Important Note for Travelers

If you have already booked your tickets, there is some relief: tickets issued before April 8 will not attract the new surcharge. However, any changes to your travel dates or itinerary after this deadline will trigger a fare recalculation based on the new rates.
