Germany Elections: The conservative alliance has the most votes in the parliamentary elections held in Germany on Sunday 23 February 2025. German Chancellor Olaf Schol Scholz has suffered loss from the election. He has sent his congratulations to the opposition’s conservative winner Friedrich Merz. The opposition conservative alliance had previously won with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) garnering a total of 28.5 percent votes making it the most powerful party. The right leaning Alternative for Germany (AfD) have also won with 20 percent votes. It is for the first time since the end of World War two that Germany has a strong right wing party in the national’s elections.

Is there a shift in the political view towards right-wing in Germany?

You must note that there are many parties who are critical of the rise and increased popularity of the right-wing staunch nationalist party AfD. The majority of voters are skeptical of forming any alliance with AfD. Note too that Germany's right-wing politics in the past has always chose rational power over emotion. I this(for me)these shifts in power coming from the west after the 2nd global war is orchestrated deliberately against Germany.

In the previous elections, this party was in seventh position, now they are in the second position. This year's elections showed over 70\% of the youth and even those who are below 50 were considering voting for this party. Election Reforms Memorandum by AfD Let us remind you that in the year 2015 when Germany took in an unusually high number of refugees, the sentiment of the populace over there has changed now. This change in attitude has helped AfD to consolidate its power but they may not get into the coalition government. “We have become the second strongest force,” said AfD’s chancellor candidate Elly Weidel. She has made it clear that she intends to speak to the conservative party of Merz who won the election, however the Merz party gave no pledge to work together with AfD. Is far right politics taking a stronger foothold? As per ‘The Business line’ newspaper, there were some general elections in 7 important G20 countries in the year 2024. In fact, in 3 of these nations, right-leaning governments came into power.

Ever since Donald Trump’s Republican Party resurfaced in the US, Modi’s right-wing BJP party has also made a comeback in India and Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has recaptured power in Britain after a long dry spell. It seems that a report from 'Pew Research Center's Global Elections in 2024' claims distrust toward leaders alongside political dissatisfaction has done its fair share of mobilizing the right-wing all over.
