Mahashivratri, the grand festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, is celebrated every year on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Falgun. This year, it falls on February 26. According to the Shiva Mahapurana, this is the day when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati tied the sacred knot, making it an occasion of immense spiritual significance.
But do you know where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati took their seven vows? The answer lies in the Triyuginarayan Temple, a revered site in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand.
The Divine Wedding at Triyuginarayan Temple
Triyuginarayan Temple is believed to be the very place where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati took seven sacred rounds (pheras) around a holy fire, signifying their eternal union. As per mythological beliefs, this temple dates back to the Treta Yuga and holds special significance for devotees of Lord Shiva.
One of the most astonishing aspects of this temple is that the fire from their wedding still burns today in the temple’s havan kund, making it a living witness to their divine marriage.
The Legend Behind the Wedding
According to mythology, Goddess Parvati, the daughter of King Himavat, was deeply devoted to Lord Shiva and wished to marry him. She performed rigorous penance to win his love and devotion. Pleased with her unwavering dedication, Lord Shiva agreed to the marriage. Their wedding was then solemnized at Triyuginarayan Temple, with the sacred fire acting as the eternal witness.
Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma’s Role in the Ceremony
Interestingly, mythology states that Lord Vishnu played the role of Goddess Parvati’s brother, overseeing all the wedding rituals, while Lord Brahma served as the priest. Due to this, the exact location where the wedding took place is known as Brahma Shila, which lies just in front of the Triyuginarayan Temple.
The Sacred Water Pools of Triyuginarayan
Before the divine wedding, three sacred water pools were created for the gods and goddesses to bathe in. These are known as:
- Rudra Kund
- Vishnu Kund
- Brahma Kund
The water for these pools originates from Saraswati Kund, which is believed to have emerged from the nose of Lord Vishnu. According to local beliefs, taking a dip in these holy waters is considered highly auspicious and is said to bless devotees with the joy of parenthood.
A Sacred Destination for Devotees
Today, Triyuginarayan Temple remains a revered pilgrimage site, attracting thousands of devotees who seek blessings for a blissful married life. Many couples even choose to get married here, believing it to be a sacred and blessed place for a lifelong union.
If you're looking for a spiritual experience steeped in mythology and divine energy, Triyuginarayan Temple is a must-visit!
