A 4.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Delhi-NCR early Monday morning, causing strong tremors across the region. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake had its epicenter in New Delhi at a depth of five kilometers and occurred at 5:36 am.

NCS data indicated that the quake was recorded at a latitude of 28.59° North and a longitude of 77.16° East, with the epicenter located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, as cited by an official from PTI.

The shallow depth of the quake intensified its impact. Experts note that earthquakes occurring at a lower depth tend to be more strongly felt. An official highlighted that the Jheel Park region experiences low-magnitude earthquakes every two to three years, with the last recorded quake of 3.3 magnitude occurring in 2015. Some residents also reported hearing a loud sound as the ground shook.

The tremors were felt across several parts of the National Capital Region (NCR), including Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, prompting residents in high-rise buildings to rush outdoors in fear.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the situation on microblogging site X, urging people to remain calm and follow safety precautions. "Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation," he posted.

The Delhi Police reassured citizens via a post on X, stating, "We hope you all are safe, Delhi!" and advised residents to call the emergency helpline 112 if needed.

AAP leader Atishi also commented on X, writing, "A strong earthquake just hit Delhi. I pray to God that everyone is safe." AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal reshared her post, adding, "I pray for the safety of everyone."

No casualties or major damage have been reported so far.
