The Indian men’s and women’s chess teams created a new history by winning the gold medal in the 45th Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. This is the first time in Indian chess history that such a feat was achieved in a Chess Olympiad. After the historic performance of both the men’s and women’s teams, while they received congratulations from all sides for this victory, Vidit Gujrathi, part of the men’s team in this Olympiad, and Divya Deshmukh, part of the women’s team, told about their experience and journey in an exclusive conversation with India TV.

Vidit who went on to become a cricketer became a chess champion.

Vidit Gujarati revealed in an exclusive interview with India TV that he wanted to become a cricketer but later when his interest in chess grew, he made it his career. Vidit said that he was very naughty in childhood and that is why his parents wanted to engage him in some sport. That is why they first took me for cricket but at that time I was very young and they asked me to wait for one more year. Then I thought that I should play chess because I used to play with my father but used to lose, but the thought was that I would learn and win, so there was an accident from which it started and here I am on the team now and what can be a better story than this.

Regarding the victory in the Chess Olympiad, Vidit said that we were the second-place team in this tournament among 189 or more countries, due to which people’s expectations had increased a lot. We had never won a gold medal before and this time the team was very young and everyone’s form was also excellent. Initially, we did not think so much but after winning the first 4 matches, in the third round, after falling behind America, we took a very good lead and then we felt that we could win the gold medal this time.

Divya started playing chess at the age of 5

18-year-old Divya Deshmukh, a member of the Indian women’s team in the Chess Olympiad, also told India TV in an exclusive interview that she started playing chess at the age of 5, after which her Chess Olympiad journey began at the age of 16 in which she was a part of the India B team where she won an individual bronze medal. Now, after debuting with the senior team, we managed to win the gold medal. It is the result of many years of hard work that we managed to win the gold medal in the Olympiad, which includes the support of all the coaches and support staff.
