The ongoing dealings regarding negotiation of Gaza ceasefire and hostage crisis were in the public agenda and US President Joe Biden addressed them with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the phone. One day after the president ordered an initiative, Biden, who leaves office on January 20, spoke with PM Netanyahu by phone and reached Cuitra with reports on the current progress toward the ceasefire craved in Doha. Rounds of discussions on negotiations that the US, Egypt, and Qatar have mediated over the last year have at times repeated stalled moments.

Mc Gurk working on final details

Biden’s advisor at national security, Jake Sullivan, told the media that McGurk has worked on final details of a text allegedly to be served to both sides, but did not predict whether a decision could be implemented by January 20 when Trump enters the office.

In presence of the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, Israel's foreign intelligence service, Mossad, David Barnea and Biden’s leading adviser on for Middle East issues, Brett McGurk have traveled to Doha to hold talks and conclude the agreement.

This upcoming week, Doyle confirmed that the enterprise is “very close” to an agreement and expressed hope to finalize it before the handover of diplomatic incumbency to the Trump administration.

Hamas has declared a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the almost destroyed region, while, his Israeli counterpart did not accept any ceasefire until Hamas’ military capability in Gaza is neutralized. Currently on the table is a step by step ceasefire, with Netanyahu indicating, that he is willing to implement only the first step of the partial release of hostages in exchange for weeks of no military actions.

On these issues, the parties differ on what type of hostages will be released under the first phase of the ceasefire, what types of Palestinians prisoners will be freed and how much Israeli forces will pull out from the densely populated areas in Gaza.

Based on information from the Gazan Health Ministry, Israel’s campaign in The Gaza Strip has claimed the lives of over 46000 Palestinians, and a bulk of them are women and children, however, the ministry does not categorize the dead into fighters and civilians. The Israeli campaign in Gaza started, after the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack by Hamas in which approximately 1200 people were brutally killed and around 250 taken captive.
