What does Acharya Chanakya say, is a wicked person more deadly than a snake

The Chanakya Niti provided people with not only guidance on statecraft and governance, but also gave an insight on making an everyday life better and improving relationships with others.

There are numerous couplets in the Chanakya Niti that throw light on discriminating between good and bad people. In one of these verses, Chanakya equates a wicked person to a snake. Find out through these three couplets why he did this.

For this purpose kings collect the nobles
In the beginning, middle and end, they always worship the king.

The stanza conveys that men of noble and gentlemanly nature are honored universally. Noble men secure an esteemed place for themselves in society owing to their manner, character and culture, which was why kings too would surround themselves with competent and virtuous people. The company of good people would undoubtedly guide an individual’s life on the right path.

The oceans become separated by the boundaries of the catastrophe.
The saintly desire to separate the ocean even at the time of annihilation

Another stanza explains that an ocean can lose its boundaries when the catastrophe occurs, but noble people never deviate from the path of virtue even at the time of annihilation or demise of all beings. This shows how character can make a difference even in the worst of situations.

The wicked are not the best of the snakes.

"It is always better to be in the company of a snake than in the company of a wicked person." Chanakya has given a famous couplet on wicked people; he writes that a snake bites us only at a time, whereas a wicked person finds a reason at every step to harm anyone. They do not even bother to deceive or cause hardship to people for their self-interest.

An undesirable association creates problems for you

Thus, Chanakya says, we should be cautious about forming friendships and developing associations with any other individual. A person should not immediately trust an individual by looking at their outward behavior but the actual character and behavior of an individual must be understood. Whereas, good relationships will bring fortune, and bad company can cause us many difficulties.
