A day after BJP Minority Morcha’s Manipur president Md Asker Ali supported the Waqf Amendment Act, a mob reportedly set fire to his residence in Lilong Sambrukhong Mamei. In response, the Thoubal district administration enforced prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) across the Lilong assembly constituency.

Security Measures Enforced to Restore Peace

The prohibitory order bans gatherings of five or more people.

Carrying weapons, including firearms, sticks, and stones, is prohibited.

This move aims to maintain law and order following Sunday night's unrest.

Details of the Mob Attack

The district magistrate’s order cited a police report confirming that a crowd of approximately 7,000 to 8,000 people, armed with lathis and stones, attacked Md Asker Ali’s home. The incident occurred shortly after Ali posted a message on social media supporting the Waqf Amendment Act. He later retracted his statement and apologized publicly, also condemning the Act.

Wider Protests Across Imphal Valley

Protests against the Waqf Amendment Act spread to various areas across the Imphal Valley on Sunday:

A rally of over 5,000 people blocked NH-102 at Lilong.

Scuffles were reported between demonstrators and security forces in Irong Chesaba and other locations.

Demonstrations also occurred in Kshatri Awang Leikai, Kairang Muslim, Kiyamgei Muslim (Imphal East), and Sora (Thoubal).

Security presence has been increased in Muslim-majority areas to prevent further escalation.
