Uttarakhand Mana Avalanche Latest Update: The remains of the last four workers trapped under the snow in Mana village of Uttarakhand were taken out on Sunday. Initially, the bodies of four workers had been recovered which brings the death toll to eight. On the other hand, 46 people have been successfully rescued. The bodies recovered from beneath the snow on Sunday were the last to be searched for. Their retrieval marked the conclusion of a rescue-relief operation lasting 60 hours.

Sudden Avalanche Traps Workers

The district officials of Chamoli said that on behalf of BRO, 54 workers were assigned for a road work near mana village close to Badrinath. To accommodate them, BRO constructed eight camps based on containers. Workers stayed in five of the containers, while the remaining three were filled with their ration supply. However, there were tremendous avalanches on Friday due to the harsh melting of the glacier which resulted in the massive collapse. In order to escape, 10 workers sprinted towards Badrinath while the remaining ones were stuck in a ratio of 3 to 1.

Workers' containers concealed under 6-foot deep snow

At once, 6-foot tall snow had covered their containers. The army was made aware of the event and commenced an inquiry immediately and started a rescue operation. Garhwal Scouts from Jyotirmath Cantonment managed to traverse the snowed in road and reached Mana. After this, walking for a few kilometers further, they located the containers of the workers filled with snow and the affected people were extracted from them. All the laborers were entombed in different containers. In an airlift, two of those brought to the military hospital in Jyotirmath were sent to AIIMS Rishikesh for better treatment, with the rest of them. 46 of them remained.

Modi was also keeping a track of this issue

The operations of the State Government and the Center were intertwined on this one. PM Modi spoke to Pushkar Dhami and got details about the incident, which was under his purview, and assured assistance from the center if required. Chief Minister Dhami flew over the site on a helicopter to assess the conditions. Badrinath still has several feet of snow. It is presumed that the conditions around Mana village are going to remain this way for a few days. As a result of the situation, the BRO has halted activities there for the time being.
