Former Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul has confirmed that he is in talks with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) about taking over as the national team’s pace bowling coach. Gul spoke to Cricbuzz on April 7, stating:
“We are in talks, but nothing is confirmed yet. The confirmation depends on mutual understanding and terms and conditions, and that is dependent on the board.”
Current Coach Andre Adams Unlikely to Continue
The BCB is actively seeking a replacement for current pace coach Andre Adams, despite his contract running until February 2026. A senior BCB official revealed that Adams may not complete his tenure due to dissatisfaction among players regarding his performance.
Adams will remain with the team for the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe, but his long-term role appears uncertain.
Umar Gul’s Coaching Experience
Since retiring in 2020, Umar Gul has gained substantial coaching experience:
Fast bowling coach for Afghanistan national team
Bowling coach for Quetta Gladiators in the PSL
Currently serving as Pakistan’s fast bowling coach
During his international career, Gul played 47 Tests, 130 ODIs, and 60 T20Is for Pakistan between 2003 and 2016.
Other Candidates for the Role
Other names being considered to replace Adams include:
Shaun Tait – former Australian pacer
Allan Donald – former Bangladesh bowling coach
Ottis Gibson – former West Indies head coach and ex-Bangladesh pace coach
BCB Coaching Updates
Phil Simmons will continue as head coach until the 2027 ICC World Cup, following a recent extension.
Mohammad Salahuddin, a respected figure in Bangladesh cricket, is set to rejoin as senior assistant coach. A BCB official confirmed a verbal agreement had been reached, with formalities to follow.
“The announcement was postponed due to unforeseen reasons but is expected to be finalized during the next board meeting,” the official added.
Salahuddin, who has previously served in multiple coaching roles, is expected to play a key role in preparing the team for upcoming international assignments.
