In a major boost to Northern India’s connectivity, a new 6-Lane Greenfield Expressway has been officially approved for Punjab. This project aims to bypass congested old routes, drastically reducing travel time between key industrial hubs and the national capital.

Unlike traditional highway expansions, this is a Greenfield project, meaning it will be built on entirely new land, allowing for straighter alignments, higher speed limits, and a more eco-friendly design with extensive plantations along the corridor.

1. The Route: Where Will It Pass?

The newly approved corridor is designed to bridge the gap between Punjab’s major economic zones.

Key Districts: The expressway is set to cut through vital regions including Ludhiana, Sangrur, Patiala, and Jalandhar.

Strategic Connect: It will act as a feeder and connector to the existing Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, ensuring that even interior parts of the state have high-speed access to the main arteries of the country.

2. Key Features of the Project

6-Lane Configuration: Designed for high-speed transit, the expressway will feature world-class safety barriers and advanced traffic management systems.

Economic Corridors: The project includes plans for Industrial Clusters along the exit points, which are expected to generate thousands of local jobs and boost the real estate value of surrounding villages.

Green Belt: In line with its "Greenfield" status, thousands of trees will be planted on both sides to mitigate carbon emissions.

3. Why This Matters for Punjab

Faster Logistics: For Punjab’s farmers and manufacturers, this means perishable goods and industrial products can reach Delhi or the ports much faster, reducing wastage and costs.

Reduced Congestion: By diverting heavy long-distance traffic away from city-center roads in Ludhiana and Patiala, local commute times within these cities will also decrease.

Fuel Savings: Smoother, straighter roads mean better fuel efficiency for vehicles, contributing to both environmental and economic savings.

4. Current Status and Timeline

The land acquisition process is expected to begin shortly. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will oversee the construction, with a focus on completing the core stretch within the next 24 to 30 months.
