Thudarum traces the life of Shanmugham (Mohanlal), a former stuntman-turned-taxi driver who is content with his life alongside his wife Lalitha (Shobana) and kids. His cherished antique, an old Ambassador car, serves as a reminder of his glorious past. All seems well in Shanmugham’s life until he faces some trouble with the police car seizure. The emotional journey of the protagonist, Shanmugham, to regain his vehicle is what drives the rest of the story.
Performance and Technical Features
Mohanlal executes humor and deep emotions with precision, blending them into one to deliver an exemplary performance.
Though Shobana had a limited role, she still stood out thanks to the natural chemistry she shared with Mohanlal.
Binu Pappu’s portrayal of SI Benny was praiseworthy given his effortless transition from humor to menace.
Prakash Varma shines in his debut performance as a calm yet menacing antagonist.
From a technical perspective:
The perfectly set clarinet even blended more expertly within the tense moments of Shaji Kumar’s cinematography.
The editing made my eyes schizo thanks to the late Nishadh Yusuf and Shafeeque V. B which perfectly maintained the film’s speed thanks to the crisp cuts.
The music added by Jakes Bejoy, which drew from folk areas, executed beautifully to deepen the emotional appeal.
Analysis
The movie begins with a light-hearted and comedic overtone, featuring amusing references to Mohanlal's previous films. But in the second half, it becomes serious and more nuanced emotional drama. Tharun Moorthy, the director, has chosen to develop strong characters and tell deeply rooted stories instead of big, flashy plot changes. The movie beautifully captures the emotional turmoil of Shanmugham, which forms the essence of the movie.
Verdict
Thudarum is heart warming drama film which shows a different side to Mohanlal, and evokes intense emotions. Despite some overly dramatic moments, the movie is highly impactful emotionally and is worth watching.
