Tesla Inc. is onboarding employees in Austin for internal testing of their ride-share app as part of a new plan to automate ride-hailing. This will help the company meet the deadline for the public rollout of the Robotaxi service in summer 2025.
Autonomous Ride-Share by Tesla
Recently, a Tesla vehicle was showcased on social media with a feature that allows it to be summoned via smartphone. While a safety driver is still present, this step captures the vision where self-driving cars achieve full autonomy.
Executive at Tesla, Elon Musk, was quoted saying this will help in the shift towards a future where no driver interaction is necessary.
Austin now joins regions like the Bay Area as part of the broader test initiative. The rides completed range to and fro from 1,500 and 15,000 miles which are said to be done under this pilot program.
Functionality of the Tesla Ride-Share System
The ride share feature leverages Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. Despite the name given, the system does require a human behind the wheel to supervise the car throughout the ride.
The starting point for the Robotaxi public launch will be Austin with roll out of 10 to 20 Model Y and expanding to other cities. More Tesla models will also be added to the fleet later on.
A new app, “Robotaxi,” is launching that will operate like Uber or Lyft allowing users to reserve a ride from their phones.
Future Plans: The Cybercab
Tesla plans to launch an exclusive ride-hailing car, the Cybercab. This two-seat will have no steering wheel or pedals.
Production for the Cybercab is expected to go into mass production next year in alignment with Tesla's plan for a fully driverless fleet.
Regulatory Developments and Market Competition
Tesla recently was granted the ability in California to begin passenger transport using autonomous cars starting with employee access.
Broader passenger use will require additional regulatory approvals which may take some time.
Other companies such as Waymo already provide autonomous driving services in some parts of Austin, putting direct competition with Tesla.
Strategic Context and Company Focus
This comes at a time when there's a sharp plunge in sales for the company. Tesla reported one of its most financially weaker quarters last year.
In a recent announcement, Elon Musk stated that he plans to disengage from matters of the government and shift his focus to Tesla’s primary innovations, self-driving technology.
