In a harrowing reminder of the dangers lurking beneath the earth’s surface, a quiet morning in north-central Nigeria turned into a scene of mass mourning. On Wednesday, February 18, 2026, a toxic gas leak at a mining site in the Kampani Zurak community of Plateau State claimed the lives of at least 37 people, leaving a community shattered and the nation in shock.
The victims, mostly young men between the ages of 20 and 35, were simply trying to earn a living when the air they breathed turned deadly.
The Incident: A Morning of Horror
The tragedy occurred around 5:45 AM, just as many miners were finishing their night shifts or preparing for the day ahead.
The Location: A lead and zinc mining pit in the Wase Local Government Area.
The Cause: Preliminary investigations by the Plateau State Police and the Ministry of Solid Minerals point to a sudden discharge of Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur, and Lead Oxide.
The "Trap": Poor ventilation in the deep tunnels allowed these odorless, colorless gases to accumulate. Eyewitnesses described workers simply collapsing where they stood, unable to realize they were being poisoned until it was too late.
A Community in Mourning
The news has devastated Kampani Zurak. By Wednesday evening, the bodies of the 37 victims were released to their families and buried in accordance with local and religious traditions.
"It is a dark day. We have lost our most energetic youths to this tragedy," said Aliyu Adamu Idris, a local traditional leader.
While 37 perished, rescue teams managed to pull 26 survivors from the pit. They are currently battling for their lives in nearby hospitals, suffering from acute respiratory distress.
The "Abandoned Mine" Crisis
This incident has reignited a fierce debate over mining safety in Nigeria. Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, noted that the site was an abandoned pit that had been unofficially ceded to or taken over by local villagers seeking economic empowerment.
Lack of Awareness: The villagers were reportedly unaware that abandoned lead sites are prone to dangerous gas emissions.
Immediate Crackdown: The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of the site and suspended the license of Solid Unit Nigeria Limited, the company associated with the area.
The Human Cost of Illegal Mining
Mining is an economic lifeline for many in Plateau State, but without regulatory oversight, it is becoming a lottery with life. This disaster follows a pattern of pit collapses and gas leaks that have plagued the region for years. For the families in Wase, the high price of lead and zinc has been paid for with the lives of their sons, brothers, and fathers.
