After a near-title run in IPL 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad have been dealt a harsh reality check this season. Their recent seven-wicket defeat to Gujarat Titans marked their fourth loss in a row, raising concerns about team form and strategy heading into the crucial phase of the tournament.
Coach Vettori Maintains Optimism Despite Gloomy Start
Head coach Daniel Vettori, speaking at the post-match press conference, acknowledged the mounting pressure but maintained hope.
"It’s obviously disappointing. The team has high expectations and we haven’t performed to our potential," he said.
With a five-day break before their next game against Punjab Kings, Vettori emphasized the need to regroup and bounce back.
Aggression Strategy Backfires, Top Order Faces Scrutiny
SRH’s high-octane batting formula from 2024—where 250+ scores were routine—hasn’t clicked this season. Despite Ishan Kishan’s century in the opener, the top order including Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma has struggled since. Vettori acknowledged that T20 cricket demands adaptability, and SRH’s approach hasn't evolved to match the conditions.
"The wicket was slow, 160-170 was par. We were close, but needed 20 more runs. Execution-wise, we weren’t far off," he noted.
Mohammed Siraj Strikes Hard Against Former Team
Former SRH pacer Mohammed Siraj played a pivotal role in GT’s win, picking up four wickets including both openers in the Powerplay. Vettori praised Siraj’s bowling:
"He bowled incredibly well. He summed up conditions perfectly, attacked the stumps, and his execution was exceptional."
SRH Struggling Across All Three Departments
Vettori admitted that issues lie beyond just batting.
"We haven’t been at our best in any department. Fielding, often a barometer for team performance, has been poor. We’ve dropped intensity."
SRH’s batting returns have dropped significantly, failing to cross 175 in their last three outings. This has increased pressure on a defensive bowling lineup led by Pat Cummins, which thrives on run cushion.
Leadership Under Fire? Vettori Dismisses Panic
While Vettori admits the 0-4 streak is alarming, he dismissed the notion of panic.
"Pat (Cummins) doesn’t panic, and I’m similar. But we understand how hard the season becomes after four straight losses."
He reiterated the importance of learning and improvement ahead of the next game.
Path Ahead: Tactical Adjustments Needed
With pitches no longer supporting power-hitting like in 2024, Vettori called for better pitch assessment and condition-based strategies, particularly for the top-three batters.
“Ishan looked good in the Powerplay against GT. We know the style that works, but we must assess better and respect opposition plans.”
