
A devastating incident at the popular Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo has resulted in the deaths of at least 98 people and over 150 others injured. Local authorities reported that the roof collapsed during a crowded concert, creating chaos and prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Rescue Operations Continue
About 12 hours after the collapse, rescue teams reported hearing sounds from survivors trapped under the rubble. The venue, constructed as a one-storey structure, was filled with nearly 300 attendees during a live performance by merengue star Rubby Pérez.
Baseball Community Mourns
Among those who died were two Dominican baseball legends:
Octavio Dotel, a former Major League Baseball pitcher.
Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera, also a former professional baseball player.
Their deaths were confirmed by Satosky Terrero, a spokesperson for the Dominican Republic’s baseball league.

American rapper Cardi B, who has Dominican heritage through her father, shared a heartfelt response on social media. She conveyed condolences and urged better safety oversight in entertainment venues across the country.
Jet Set’s Legacy and Previous Incidents
Jet Set, founded in 1973, became a cultural landmark in Santo Domingo. Known for its Jet Set Mondays, the club featured both local and international performers. It was renovated in 2010 and again in 2015. The venue was previously struck by lightning in 2023. The cause of the current collapse is still under investigation.
