Nilam Shinde Case: A car accident has left Indian student, Neelam Shinde from UC Berkley, emotional and in a dire condition. Upon examination, doctors found that she fractured one of her hands and both legs in addition to receiving a head injury that ultimately placed her into a coma. Once her father found out about the incident, he applied for a US visa in hopes to speak to his daughter but sadly, was not granted one.

Struggle for US Visa

Nonetheless, India’s External Affairs Minister Jaishankar aided in advocating for the visa which allowed Neelam’s father to successfully travel. Further, Neelam’s brother mentioned that they were able to book an appointment in Mumbai that would issue an American visa allowing the family to travel to the US.

Neelam’s father Tanaji Shinde recalls that he does not recall having much luck in receiving the US visa. However, he did recently calendar his conversation with Neel where she claimed to feel guilty for lacking the motivation to move on her mothers death anniversary.

Neelam, who had also completed an internship at NASA for a year, was in the final semester of her MS Engineering degree. He learned of her accident through a friend of Neelam two days later.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident has been arrested. The individual, having deserted the scene of the accident, is a 58-year-old man by the name of Lawrence Gallo. According to a report filed by the Sancramento Police, Gallo was apprehended on 19 February 2025. He is said to have abandoned Neelam who was wounded after the accident on the road. She was promptly rushed to a nearby medical facility. As per the police, they discovered Neelam in that condition. Police were informed of the incident on 14 February 2025.
