Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene emphasized the need for sharper execution and a more ruthless mindset after his team’s 12-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants in their IPL 2025 encounter.

Despite a strong showing from Suryakumar Yadav, who scored a half-century, and Hardik Pandya, who remained unbeaten in the chase and took a five-wicket haul, MI fell short. Jayawardene said the team must learn to finish matches they control.

“We were in the game even after losing two early wickets,” Jayawardene said. “But we weren’t smart enough in critical moments and didn’t execute plans effectively.”

Bowling in the Powerplay Needs Adjustment

Mumbai Indians conceded 69 runs in the powerplay, a concerning figure at a traditionally slower pitch. Jayawardene acknowledged that adjustments in pace and line were made too late.

“Hardik understood the pitch well and adjusted accordingly with slower deliveries and back-of-length balls, which helped us pull the game back. We should have made those adjustments earlier,” he added.

Away Game Woes Continue

Since 2023, MI have won just 5 of their last 19 away matches, including 0 wins in three away games this season. Jayawardene admitted this trend needs to change but said the team is now in a better rhythm compared to their earlier matches.

“On the road, you're tested more. Good teams win away games. Now, we have a chance to capitalize on home matches,” he said.

Upcoming Fixtures Give MI a Chance to Recover

Mumbai Indians will play three of their next four matches at home, offering a solid opportunity to get back into form:

vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Home)

vs Delhi Capitals (Away)

vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (Home)

vs Chennai Super Kings (Home)

Jayawardene remains optimistic, saying the tournament is still open with every team capable of beating each other.
