The Lebanese Armed Forces announced the detention of multiple individuals involved in two separate rocket attacks on Israel in late March. The attacks triggered immediate and forceful Israeli retaliatory airstrikes on areas of Lebanon. The Lebanese military confirmed the confiscation of a vehicle and equipment linked to the rocket launches and stated that the detainees have been referred to judicial authorities.
Suspects Include Palestinians Allegedly Tied to Hamas
While Hezbollah denied involvement in the rocket attacks, Lebanese authorities detained four Palestinians reportedly linked to Hamas, according to security and judicial sources. A Hamas official, however, denied the group's involvement in the rocket attacks, adding that some members had been briefly detained for unrelated reasons such as possession of unlicensed firearms.
Security Briefings and UN Resolution Enforcement
General Rodolph Haikal updated Lebanon’s cabinet on the border situation and the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions, particularly those related to post-conflict stability between Israel and Hezbollah following the 2006 war. The Lebanese military continues operations to identify and dismantle armed groups operating near the Israeli border.
Continuing Conflict Despite Ceasefire
The Israel-Hamas war, which began in October 2023, prompted Hezbollah to launch cross-border attacks. Though a U.S.-brokered ceasefire was implemented in late November 2023, Israel has continued airstrikes in Lebanon, reportedly killing both civilians and Hezbollah fighters.
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reported that at least 71 civilians, including 14 women and 9 children, have died due to Israeli strikes in Lebanon since the ceasefire began.
