Udit Narayan has been an indin mark and a crooner for Bollywood for decades, and now he is under scrutiny for kissing a fan at one of his concerts. The event sparked outrage on social media as many users commented Udit's actions to be tacky and violating. To add fuel to the fire, controversy singer, Kunickaa Sadanand, tried justifying the act of offending and offered her side of the story, reasoning that the kiss wasn't the issue.
Udit Narayan critic's sides with him.
While speaking to Hindi Rush, she claimed had the singer kissed Udit’s cheeks, there would have been significantly less drama surrounding the event, thus leading to her standing point which reveals her left-leaning feminism side which seemed disturbing.
Kunickaa Sadanand’s take on concerts
She didn’t stop there. Kunickaa put forth that concerts have a different level of energy since the performers get lost in the excitement. She tried to compare the experience to what one would feel in a trance, asserting that during heightened adrenalin, artists tend to do many things on a whimp – sometimes too impulsively. Still, she also conceded that many might decide to disagree with her, for assuming she is already anticipating the backlash from the shift of focus from the singer to the fan’s action.
Udit Narayan trolling over the internet
In the meantime, some of the netizens seem to be saying otherwise. Users on social media are pointing fingers at him saying that he is clearly going over the top and are challenging the acceptance of such a thing in the name of `fan love` or any other form of appreciation. However, the singer tried to explain it by dismissing it as simply ‘unconditional love for fans' which did not cut it for netizens. It’s worse when it comes to dealing with many of them in public. It is now becoming clearer that a more coherent debate is needed around public figures and their abuses of authority and the issue of consent.
While some fans support the notion that the fan did indeed seem to volunteer to take part in the incident, other's counterclaim that the power dynamics involved means that the whole thing is vexatious. This has intensified the discussion of how public figures relate to their fans and where the boundary lies.
As of now, Udit Narayan may have some defenders in the industry, but their ire does not seem forgiven. The public outrage extends well beyond the ‘unconditional love’ excuse provided by the singer. In the meantime, memes continue to flood in, twitter remains severed, and the everlasting reply to the fan in-jokes is still in question.
