The Karnataka Legislative Assembly witnessed high drama on Friday as opposition BJP MLAs protested the passing of a bill providing 4% reservation to Muslims in public contracts. The chaos began when BJP legislators climbed onto the Speaker’s podium and threw papers at Speaker U T Khader, prompting marshals to intervene and remove them from the Assembly hall, PTI reported.

BJP Decries Bill as “Unconstitutional”

Opposition leader R Ashoka led the BJP’s protest, declaring the bill unconstitutional and announcing that the party will legally challenge its provisions. BJP MLAs raised slogans against the Congress-led state government, accusing it of appeasement politics.

BJP MLA Bharath Shetty stated, “Instead of discussing the honey trap scam, the Chief Minister was busy presenting the 4 percent Muslim bill and hence we protested. The government MLAs also tore papers and threw books at us; we didn’t harm anybody.”

Multiple Bills Passed Amid Chaos

Despite the disorder, the Assembly passed several key bills including:

  • The State Budget
  • Pay hikes for MLAs, ministers, and the Chief Minister
  • Pension and allowance increases for elected representatives

Earlier in the day, the BJP had been protesting in the well of the house, demanding a judicial probe into an alleged honey trap scandal involving a minister. The Chief Minister proceeded with his budget response amid ongoing disruption from the opposition.
