External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on Monday to discuss the consequences of new US tariffs affecting Indian exports. The conversation aimed to explore ways to achieve a balanced trade relationship, according to a statement from the US State Department.

The discussion follows US President Donald Trump's announcement of a 10% base tariff on all imports, with specific countries—including India—facing higher rates. India now faces a 26% tariff under the revised US import regime, sparking concern among global trade partners.

India Focuses on Dialogue, Avoids Retaliation

Despite the tariff hike, India has chosen not to respond with countermeasures. A senior Indian government official stated over the weekend that New Delhi is focused on concluding the long-pending Bilateral Trade Agreement with the US, with a target completion date of autumn 2025.

On platform X (formerly Twitter), Minister Jaishankar shared details of his conversation with Rubio, noting the urgency of resolving trade matters. He also mentioned discussions on broader global issues, including the Indo-Pacific, West Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean.

“Good to speak with @SecRubio today... Agreed on the importance of the early conclusion of the Bilateral Trade Agreement,” Jaishankar posted.

US, India Seek “Fair and Balanced” Trade Terms

The US State Department confirmed the trade discussion, noting that both parties reiterated their commitment to achieving a mutually beneficial agreement. The focus remains on easing tariff tensions and building stronger economic ties.

Rubio and Jaishankar also reviewed key international developments. These included security issues in the Indo-Pacific region, ongoing crises in West Asia, and humanitarian challenges across Europe and the Caribbean.

Call for Greater Global Responsibility

In a related development, Rubio, during a speech at NATO headquarters in Brussels, urged major economies like India and China to contribute more significantly to global humanitarian aid. His remarks came in the wake of deadly earthquakes in Myanmar, where aid efforts are underway.

Rubio emphasized the growing responsibility of rising global powers in managing international crises and promoting solidarity during emergencies.

Next Steps on US-India Trade

India and the United States had earlier agreed in February 2025 to finalize a comprehensive trade pact that addresses tariff issues and strengthens overall economic cooperation. The latest conversation between Jaishankar and Rubio suggests ongoing commitment from both sides to move the agreement forward.
