New Research Warns That Even Dim Nighttime Light Can Alter Your Heart's Structure

Do you have a habit of sleeping with a night lamp on or leaving a glowing screen nearby? While a little light might feel comforting, new research published in the European Heart Journal reveals that even low levels of nighttime light exposure can cause potentially harmful changes in the structure and function of the human heart. Led by Lu Chi, Distinguished Chair and Professor at Tulane University in the US, the study analyzed data from 11,017 participants who wore wrist sensors for a week to track nighttime light levels—ranging from near-complete darkness (0 lux) to just 3 lux, which is comparable to a dimly lit phone screen or light filtering through a crack in a door. After a three-year follow-up period, cardiovascular magnetic resonance scans revealed striking structural shifts in participants exposed to ambient light during sleep.

How Night Light Thickens Heart Walls and Why Reducing Exposure is a Modifiable Risk Factor

The findings demonstrated that exposure to more than 3 lux of light at night was directly associated with left ventricular (LV) concentric hypertrophy and subclinical functional decline, including a 2.4 percent increase in LV mass, a 1.5 percent increase in mean wall thickness, and a 1.9 percent reduction in myocardial contractile fraction. Researchers noted that those exposed to the highest levels of light experienced thickening in the walls of the heart's left chamber along with a reduced capacity to contract and expand efficiently—early warning signs of potential heart failure and cardiac remodeling typically triggered by prolonged stress or injury. Unlike unmodifiable risk factors like age or genetics, nighttime light pollution is entirely within our control. Experts suggest that simple lifestyle adjustments—such as turning off glowing screens, drawing heavy curtains, or wearing an eye mask—can serve as an effective, modifiable strategy for protecting long-term cardiovascular health.
