Mass layoffs from high-profile technology companies do not seem to let up any time soon. As per the report from CNBC, there is a recently fired Google employee along with other new lay offs from their HR department as well as from the Clod Business Unit. In an internal communication by HR leader Fiona Cicconi, the company scrapped plans for a European office to focus on aggressive internal restructuring instead. Additionally, there is mention that google plans to institute a voluntary separation offer for full-time employees located in the US within the People Operations department, which is set to start in the beginning of March.
Google has started purchasing the contracts of employees from a few of their departments. Per the report, Google’s level 5 and level 4 employees appear to fall into the category of being “laid off” the new buyout schemes of HR in which they are likely entitled to 14 weeks of severance pay. These middle and senior staff bonuses also include increment for a full year of service.
Google, on the other hand, Cloud division will be needing all hands on deck but that does not mean that all employees within this section have been invited to keep their positions. In its focus to become leaner, some employees have had to relocate to different countries.
A statement was issued by Google by claiming, “As we continue to invest in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead, we are focusing on promising areas, and strategically altering the company structure to better allow for efficiency, long term success and removal of superfluous layers.” said Brandon Asberry, Google spokesperson.
According to Business Insider, it is speculated that the total number of layoffs might not exceed 200, however, there are no details available regarding the exact number of employees archiving termination letters.
In January 2025, Google offered Pixel hardware, Android division, and other employees the opportunity to sell voluntary buyout packages, so this is not the first time they have proposed this option.
