Actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, along with director Gopichand Malineni and producer Naveen Yerneni have been charged in an FIR lodged in Sadar Police Station in Jalandhar. The FIR claims that Jaat, their latest film, contains a scene that has hurt religious sentiments.
The complaint was filed under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) by Vikalp Gold who resides in Pholdiwal village of Jalandhar. The problematic scene shows Randeep Hooda’s character, the antagonist, praying on a church pulpit and a mounted crucifix serves as the backdrop. Protestors contend that this depiction constitutes violence and an invasion of the sanctity of Christian worship.
Members of the Christian Community Went Out On the Streets After Watching the Scene
The scene was condemned by members of the Christian community while staging protests outside the office of the Police Commissioner’s. They also passed a memorandum calling for severe punishment to the filmmakers. The community believes that the portrayal is demeaning disrespect to the crucifix — Jesus Christ’s divine sacrifice — along with the intel preached around comes serves unabashed.
Regardless of the increasing criticism, there does not seem to be any breaking point for the constant stream of revenue being generated through ticket sales.
‘Jaat’ Maintains Strong Box Office Numbers Amid Controversy
Jaat has completed its first-week run in theaters, earning an estimated ₹61.50 crore nett. It was directed by Gopichand Malineni and produced by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory; the film features actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, and Vineet Kumar Singh in major roles.
Starting this latter half of the week, the film is likely to receive ultrasonic competition from Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2. The commercial implications of the controversy, if any, still seem ambiguous.
