Why is it important for doctors to take care of their health: Doctors Day is celebrated on 1 July in India. This day was chosen because it is the birthday and death anniversary of the famous physician, freedom fighter and former CM of West Bengal Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Doctors are respected a lot in our society because it is their responsibility to cure the illness of patients, but are they able to take care of themselves?

You have to take care of your health

Doctors are often presented as role models, this is because they work hard to save the lives of patients and maintain their health, however, it is also important that doctors give priority to their health. Only then will they be able to provide good quality health care to others?

What is the doctor’s opinion?

According to Dr Garima Sawhney, Senior Gynecologist (Pristine Care), the most important thing is that the physical and mental demands of the medical profession are very high. Long working hours, high-stress situations and the emotional pressure of relieving patients’ problems can lead to burnout. Burnout is a major issue among doctors, characterized by emotional exhaustion, lack of personalization and a lack of sense of personal accomplishment. It not only affects the well-being of the doctor but can also affect patient care.

there is a chance of mistakes

Many researches have shown that due to burnout, doctors can make more mistakes, which compromises the health of the patient. Apart from this, the mental health of medical practitioners is affected, which can cause depression and anxiety. This is the reason why doctors should take special care of their health so that they can perform their duty properly.

Patients will be happy with a healthy doctor

On the other hand, doctors are no less than angels for their patients. When they prioritise their health, they set a positive example for their patients. Patients are more likely to heed advice on healthy lifestyles, diet, exercise, and preventive care when they see their doctors having such a positive attitude. This modeling of healthy behavior can bring about a ripple effect that promotes a healthy culture among people. It is important to ensure that they have time for self-care, family, and hobbies, which are essential for their overall happiness and satisfaction.

Doctors should take care of their health not only for personal benefit but also because it helps patients get the best treatment or advice, i.e. the standard of medical practice increases which is important for the health care system. Only a healthy doctor can take care of patients in the right way.
