Uttar Pradesh is gearing up for a major agricultural transformation. Recognizing that expanding farmland is no longer an option, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has introduced a revolutionary "Intercropping Model" designed to multiply farmers' income without needing a single extra acre of land.

The strategy is simple yet brilliant: Integrate oilseeds and pulses with sugarcane farming.

What is the Intercropping Formula?

Intercropping is the practice of growing two or more crops in close proximity during the same season. CM Yogi’s model focuses on using the 29.50 lakh hectares of sugarcane-growing land in UP to simultaneously grow high-value crops like mustard, lentils, urad, and moong.

Rabi Season (Winter): Farmers are encouraged to grow Mustard and Masoor (Lentils) alongside sugarcane.

Zaid Season (Summer): The focus shifts to Urad and Moong (Pulses).

Why This is a Game-Changer for Farmers

Multiplied Income: Instead of waiting for a single sugarcane harvest, farmers get additional production from the secondary crops throughout the year.

Lower Costs: Growing pulses and oilseeds within existing sugarcane fields reduces the overall cost of labor, water, and fertilizers per unit of produce.

Risk Protection: If one crop fails due to weather or pests, the other provides a financial safety net.

Self-Reliance: This mission aims to make Uttar Pradesh—and India—self-sufficient in oilseed and pulse production, reducing dependence on imports.

Mission Mode: 2026 to 2031

The Chief Minister has directed that this plan be implemented in "Mission Mode" from 2026-27 to 2030-31. To ensure scientific accuracy, Agricultural Science Centers (KVKs) and Agricultural Universities will help farmers select the best crop combinations based on their soil and climate.

The goal is clear: to hit the Trillion-Dollar Economy target for the state, every unit of land must produce more. This isn't just about doubling income anymore; it’s about creating a sustainable, high-yield future for the backbone of UP its farmers.
