Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh became a flashpoint of ideological tension today, Monday, March 9, 2026. What was planned as a scholarly lecture on the life and sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji quickly turned into a scene of heavy police deployment and student detentions.

The controversy erupted over a seminar titled "Sacrifice, Equality and Moral Authority: Sikh History, Guru Tegh Bahadur and the Panj Pyare in the Indian Civilisational Ethos." While the topic itself is deeply revered, the choice of speakers specifically Banveer Singh, a senior RSS leader, and Iqbal Singh Lalpura, a BJP parliamentary board member—triggered a fierce backlash from several student outfits.

The Root of the Conflict

Protesting groups, led by organizations like SATH, argued that the university campus should remain a neutral ground for academic pursuit, free from "political propaganda." The protesters cited a 2004 hukumnama (edict) from the Akal Takht, which cautions against the interference of the RSS in Sikh religious matters.

"Panjab University is a place for critical thinking, not for promoting a specific political ideology under the guise of history," one protesting student remarked before being escorted away by security.

Chaos at the Law Auditorium

As the event was set to begin at the Law Auditorium, slogans echoed through the corridors. Protesters attempted to block the entrance, leading to a tense standoff with university security. Fearing the situation might spiral out of control, the administration called in the Chandigarh Police.

Multiple students were detained and taken to the Sector-11 police station in buses. Despite being detained, many continued to raise slogans from the bus windows, asserting their right to dissent.

The Other Side of the Story

On the flip side, the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) and the event organizers defended the seminar. They maintained that the program was strictly educational, aimed at highlighting the unparalleled sacrifices of the Sikh Gurus for the nation.

Organizers argued that inviting a diverse range of speakers, including those from the RSS and BJP, should be seen through the lens of freedom of expression. They alleged that the protests were "politically motivated" by rival groups looking to gain traction ahead of upcoming regional student and state-level elections.

A Pattern of Unrest?

This incident isn't an isolated one. Panjab University has recently seen a wave of protests regarding its governing Senate and Syndicate structure. Today's clash adds another layer to the ongoing debate about the "saffronization" of education versus the "preservation" of traditional campus culture.

For now, a heavy police presence remains at the campus gates. While the lecture eventually proceeded, the echoes of the protest serve as a reminder of the deeply divided opinions currently shaping one of North India’s most prestigious institutions.
