The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed Advocate Narender Mann as the special public prosecutor for the National Investigation Agency's case against Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key figure in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

A gazette notification was issued late Wednesday confirming Mann’s appointment. He will serve a three-year term or until the trial concludes, whichever is earlier. The case pertains to NIA case RC-04/2009/NIA/DLI involving Rana and David Coleman Headley.

Rana to Be Brought to India for Trial

Rana, aged 64, is a Canadian national born in Pakistan and known to be a close associate of David Coleman Headley, a U.S. citizen and co-conspirator in the attacks. Reports state that Rana will arrive in Delhi on Thursday and be taken into custody by NIA officials.

A joint team from the NIA and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) is responsible for his return to India.

Officials Comment on Extradition Efforts

Former NIA Director General Yogesh Chander Modi highlighted the coordination between Indian and U.S. agencies, stating that the Ministry of External Affairs and NIA worked together to ensure Rana’s extradition. He emphasized the strong political will from both countries and the comprehensive evidence submitted in U.S. courts by the NIA.

Home Minister Lauds Government’s Diplomatic Efforts

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit, said that Rana’s extradition is a result of strong international diplomacy and India's determination to deliver justice.

Security Arrangements Underway in Mumbai

If transferred to Mumbai for trial, Rana will be held in Arthur Road Jail’s barrack number 12 — the same high-security section where Ajmal Kasab, the only terrorist captured alive during the 26/11 attacks, was jailed before his execution in 2012.
